Applicability, wisdom, and truth of its message are measures that Tolkien's work is generally agreed to excel in. But these are often dismissed as subjective. There is one quantifiable and empirical measure of greatness in art. Wide and long sustained popularity. In that attribute LotR has no peer in the realm of fiction.

@daveyjones5702 "tolkien wrote it FOR HIS GRANDKIDS." And you suppose that such a person would not include MORAL INSTRUCTION in a book for his grandchildren? Your conclusion does not follow from your data. His work was not a trifle. He took years to write it.
