Only 7% of the total workforce (300 million) and in the private sector (120 million) are unionized and that number is shrinking as more American workers become more reactionary and right wing in their politics. Workers are divided and voted for Trump, it was their show of defiance against the Democrats and Liberals on the Left. From 1980 to the present, the Democratic party (Clinton) got four major pieces of legislation passed that gave the advantage to Walmart and Co., Wall Street, Silicon Valley, the Military, the Financial System over the American working class. NAFTA, bank reform, welfare reform, crime bill, had set the stage for the destruction of unions and the workers degradation on two levels, material deprivation and wage suppression. At the time the unions were behind Clinton's reforms and to the average worker receiving the brunt of those reforms coming home to roost after the crash of 2007 led to Trump(ism).
Effectively, the Democrats have successfully destroyed the economic base of the masses and constructed a capitalist communism for the elite ruling classes that the American working class has no chance of a revolutionary transformation of society without France, Germany, Britain, Brazil, China, India, and Russia or Latin America being the center of another world historic proletarian revolution that can spread to American workers.
This talk may sound vintage but when you consider the worldwide trends of labor struggles they become more intensified in hard times. The condition of the American worker is worse than their counterparts that a major upheaval in breaking down the empire is necessary but not possible without the cooperation of workers everywhere since America's capitalism extends that far around the globe. Economics and climate change, war and disasters forces our consciousness to take account of this necessity.
