Agriculture is equated to value that hunger and starvation is measured. They can only count those who buy food. People who cannot buy food are not counted because you cannot trace exchange based on one use-value for another use-value. The only exchange that can be counted are those where money was used to buy food. So if you have a certain number of food that was produced and was sold that will not tell you how many died from lack of food. This crisis will get amplified because there isn’t a single commodity acting as equal to all the others and transactions are not the same thing as values people might use or other people can use for that person to use as currency itself to get food. You can never know the real level of starvation because all goods can be a equivalent for others. You’d have to count the starving by actually compiling deaths due to starvation and subtract that from the total population to get a sense of what that country has going wrong with food. This cannot be done from a computer.
