Not many people old enough paid attention when the EU was first proposed and why. It was all about making trade and commerce move freely across states and one currency. The EU was never a plan that would internationalize workers in different European states so that a union could unionize in another country. Or, if wages went up in France they would rise in Britain. In effect the EU was a plan for corporations and banks in Europe an internationalization of Capital in order to compete with the USA. Individually, nation-states were not strong enough to resist American pressure to open their markets to America products. Two generations later the memory of the function and purpose of the EU is forgotten but its consequences, recessions and unemployment, are felt internationally as well.
