  1. Very few people know the Civil War of 1861 started in the same year of the Cotton Famine. Right through the Great Depression the price of cotton fell destroying the old plantation owners. Prices did not pick up until the second world war. By then the steam ginny and cotton spinning machines had industrialized the cotton field replacing all manual labor but the driver of the machine. New force of production took over the old method of production of the south. The rural landscape in the South off the highways across America, cotton field relics turned into pasture and grazing land. The plantation owners died off their heirs moving on some restoring the old plantations as museums and most of them renouncing the 'Lost Cause', but new ones entering politics and waging social wars because the economic war against the North was defeated.
