What is their name? Do you know Julia Serano? Robert Sapolsky? Also two highly accomplished biologists who have spoken about both sex and gender in detail

If you'd like to hear some of the complexities you've hinted towards, a biologist called Julia Serano just put a fascinating video on here. You can tell it's only scratching the surface too - and it's almost an hour long lol.

@impossibleagent3663 no really, it's observable reality. Seriously, do you really think our bodies are so simple? Do you know of epigenetics? How our lived experiences alter our genetics? There is just too much going on in our bodies to draw solid lines - the further you look into this stuff the more tangled and bizarre it becomes. It's cool AF There have been many names for these people who don't fit in box A or B throughout many cultures. Hijra and 2 spirit are two historical ones I'm aware of. But we seem to be going with trans in our time and place.

Have you heard of a biologist called Julia Serano? Her latest vid is genuinely fascinating and from the way she explains it, it seems sex is not binary but unique; we tend to cluster towards two phenotypes. I mentioned her on here after Katy's interview but no one seems that interested. She's pretty accomplished. Same for Sapolsky, he's done some stuff on brain gender too.

@Gingerblaze pip install scipy I think you are half right, we do have sexually dimorphic traits, but it seems it is more accurate to say there are infinite "sexes", but all of the many variables that make up the property we have assigned "sex" mostly tend to cluster towards two phenotypes we decided to call "man" and "woman".

@allosaurusfragilis7782 Look up Julia Serano dude. The way our body works is so incredibly complicated, there are too many things at play for sex to be binary. The more you learn about this, the less the binary idea makes sense

@robertmarshall2502 Sweet man, good luck trying to make Sapolsky look untrustworthy lol the guy has already done his work, written his books etc... Sperm and egg make a human yeah, but what does that have to do with trans identities? No one is suggesting transmen create sperm...

@debbieshrubb1222 Yeah I mean I never knew that estrogens are essential for men to be fertile. I learn loads of cool things listening to biologists talk about this stuff. We're insanely complicated beings, there's a whole universe going on inside us.

There are infinite configurations in which our body can be constructed. The markers we use to determine something we have called "sex" tend to cluster towards two phenotypes, but really there is too much going on to call it binary.

@robertmarshall2502 Nah I just think the gamete argument is bollocks. It's not a deciding factor in the way sex is viewed by some. There are many things that make someone male, female, or other. Gamete production is only one. You saying infertile men are sexless?

@robertmarshall2502 Yeah, it's just the biologists that I've seen talk about this stuff have said different. And they appear to have done plenty of research. I'm aware there are different views, there are lots of disagreements in science. You can ignore the things they talk about if you want, I'm gonna keep watching both sides though :) And no I don't think reproduction is that important to gender identity since not all cis people can reproduce. They're still men and women, or whatever they tell me lol

@azimuth5620 What we call 'sex' is actually a configuration of thousands of chemicals and markers - they tend to cluster towards two phenotypes that we call 'male' and 'female'. But for some people, enough of these chemicals/sexually dimorphic areas of the brain etc - they don't align with either cluster. So really it is more accurate to say we are all completely unique, there is no sex (or infinite sexes however you look at it). But some people don't fall into either clusters, and tbh it's an impressive display of self awareness to be able to evaluate who you are to that level.

@azimuth5620 Do you know how metaphors function? Metaphors are a form of figurative language, which refers to words or expressions that mean something different from their literal definition. There is no literal box. Hope this helps.

@WatermelonPeppermint I'm surprised it doesn't get more attention. They can't even speak and they're having their bodies modified. Yet when I try and get answers about sex and gender from a biologist I get told I'm in a cult lol..
