Another 30% have experienced mild illnesses. But 10-15% have required hospitalization, and 1% have died. So they got lucky. Big deal. They had a 70% chance of being lucky. The fact that they were in the 30% instead of the 50% means they’re unhealthy or have a chitty immune system or something.

  9.  @leiatyndall8648 , Once the pandemic started, they should have taken blood samples from everyone, then check them for everything we can check them for when people test positive so we could compare those who experience mild or no symptoms with those who experience severe symptoms so we coils see if there’s a pattern. If supplements or anything else makes a difference, then we could provide everyone with those supplements, or at least have a test to determine who is at higher risk. Testing for Vitamin D levels after people get sick won’t tell you if those who become severely ill were Vitamin D deficient before they were infected, or Covid causes Vitamin D deficiency. Maybe Covid somehow uses up all your Vitamin D causing a deficiency.

Since BA.2 can’t reinfect those who have been previously infected by BA.1, we will reach herd immunity against Omicron soon. If there’s another bad spike, it’ll be another variant that is able to reinfect both those who have been previously infected and those who have been previously infected. This might happen, or it might not happen. There are experimental methods both in vitro and in silico to predict whether such variants are possible.

I recently learned that the polio virus causes asymptomatic infection in 90% of the population. Only 10% get sick when they are infected, and only 1% develop paralysis. Back when polio was a problem, they didn’t know this. They didn’t have any tests to determine whether someone was infected with the virus. All they had to go on was symptoms. After all these years, and so much technological and medical advances, we still have no clue why some people are effected, and others are not. Why do only 10% of those infected by the polio virus experience symptoms when we know that way more than 10% of the population has comorbidities, are vitamin deficient, and lead an unhealthy lifestyle. A huge portion of the unhealthy are not affected, and many who are extremely healthy are effected.

  21.  @dominicdowner6165 , 2/3rd of those who are hospitalized because of Covid have at least 1 comorbidity. You probably won’t understand this, but that means that 1/3rd have 0 comorbidities. Also, just about 50% of the population has at least 1 comorbidity. I doubt you’ll understand this either, but what this means is that having 0 comorbidities reduces your risk of hospitalization by 50% vs having at least 1 comorbidity. The vaccines or previous infection both reduce your risk of hospitalization by 90-95%.

Everyone in SA absolutely was infected. Remember, 50% who are infected by this virus are asymptomatic. That means that they won’t bother getting tested.

With Omicron the vaccines reduce your risk of hospitalization by 90-95%. The vaccines are therefore way more effective than being healthy. No, I’m not overweight.

I bet you prefer to look both ways before you cross, because 10-15% change of ending up in the hospital isn’t very good odds.

Also, masks are very effective at blocking the mucus droplets that contain the virus. Think about it this way. I would be terrifying to cross a busy street with my eyes closed. But after looking both ways it’s not. If you understand how things work, and you take proper precautions that you know are effective, then there’s absolutely no reason to be terrified.
