And the drunks and party animals. No, PB's not a good place to raise a family.

That's true, but remember the line was built back in the 1800s, and the original builders chose what seemed like the most cost-effective route, along the coast. Much of the land between SD and LA away from the coast is very hilly, so an inland line would've required a lot of tunnels.

Do you want the homeless off the streets or not?

There's also Flixbus. Last December I flew down from Seattle to San Diego to visit some friends and take Amtrak's Coast Starlight back from LA. I'd heard about the track closure then but thought there'd be a bus from Oceanside to Irvine, but then when I arrived at the Santa Fe Depot they said the next train wouldn't be leave until night. And that's how I found out about Flixbus, and was able to spend a nice evening in Hollywood and LA.

@joelincolnlincoln6315 Do you want to shut down I-5 then?
1
@cjs83172 True, but given the glacial pace of the current HSR project, I wouldn't hold your breath for that.

That area's really hilly though. It would probably require a lot of expensive tunnels.

Not to mention all those coastal neighborhoods. Yeah, San Diego is kinda in a natural cul-de-sac, and its one-runway airport also doesn't help. If Lindbergh Field were somehow shut down and the railroad were cut off (like, say, during a major earthquake), the city would be screwed. They really should've moved the airport to Miramar.

@hurryandleave9680 Why? Unless they've committed robberies or assaulted people, what crimes have they committed?
1
That's true of a lot of big cities, unfortunately.

Yeah, this was during a major El Nino event, so I've heard. I wonder if the royals were surprised by all the rain in SD then.
