PS: Yes, Taliaferro County is actually pronounced to rhyme with "Oliver". It was named after Benjamin Taliaferro, a scion of an Anglo-Italian family whose name pronunciation was altered by the same trend in English pronunciation which turned, for instance, Wymondham into Windham ("Windum"), Cholmondeley into Chumley, and Belvoir into Beaver, among many, many others.
I'm not from the area and don't know anyone from there, but I've had a longtime interest in geography and language and I've learned some local pronunciations over the years (such as "Cayro" for Cairo, Illinois, among others). To any Georgians from the area in the thread; do people often confuse with it fellow Georgia county Telfair?

@acbulgin2 See what I said below about nu-America and Putinland. And I don't think it will be much of a push to send this country into full-on police state status, "Russia with baseball" as I like to think of it. I'm no fan of Trump, but I don't want him to be assassinated. With this land in the current socio-politico-financial swamp it's in, and with 9/11 still recent enough to be used as a political weapon, I kinda believe that President Pence's first act would be to declare "temporary" martial law ("until ALL the criminals who committed this treacherous, cowardly act are brought to justice"), just like how the Patriot Act was supposed to be temporary. And I mean complete with armed soldiers and armored vehicles on every corner, sunset curfews, bans or at least limitations on public gatherings, "temporary" revocation of habeas corpus, travel bans, etc.
Maybe Australia and New Zealand might relax their immigration restrictions at some point (Canada will probably fill up pretty quick).

Okay, I was a bit wrong about BART using the wrong metal in their rails. What I should've said was that BART's rails are flat, whereas most rails are slightly curved, which requires expensive, custom-designed wheels. On top of that, it also has "a unique 1000-volt power traction system" that "can't be repaired or replaced with off-the-shelf technology". And on top of all of that, the system was only designed to carry 100,000 people per week, and now carries about 430,000 per day. https://www.mercurynews.com/2016/03/25/has-barts-cutting-edge-1972-technology-design-come-back-to-haunt-it/ So again, count your blessings, NYC.

Forgot to mention that Oymyakon had the lowest temperature outside of Antarctica on record. How cold is -90F? Well, to give you some idea, the coldest temperature ever recorded in North America was -81.4F in Snag, Yukon Territory, Canada, in 1947. The weather observer there reported that his breath instantly froze and fell to the ground with a tinkling noise, and could easily hear people talking and dogs barking from about four miles away, since extreme cold amplifies sound waves. An airplane that passed at about 10,000 feet up was heard when it was 20 miles away from Snag, and described as "deafening" when it passed directly overhead. People living near the airport thought it was landing. Teh Wiki doesn't describe anything about that in Oymyakon, but I wouldn't be surprised if they've experienced similar phenomena during their deep cold snaps.

@Drock How exactly?
Yes, the Democrats also played a role in real estate in many big cities becoming hyperinflated. If you think all Democrats are diehard supporters of more corporate-friendly Dems like Pelosi, think again. Anyway, I work for a company that serves as sort of a go-between for government agencies and consultants, including architects. Low-cost housing projects are on the rise, though they should've been years ago.
So what I want to know is, how is a strictly profit-based approach to housing going to get non-addicted, mentally healthy people off the streets ASAP? (Yes, the addicts and mentally ill should be institutionalized; the closure of the asylums was a mistake by both parties.) As long as real estate in Portland and other cities like San Francisco and LA is so grossly overvalued, why wouldn't for-profit builders only seek the biggest bang for their buck by building more million-dollar condos? No, low-cost homes should not be Frasier-sized penthouses with all the amenities. Yes, residents should be encourage to move out once they save up enough money. But they need to have somewhere to start if you want the homeless crisis to end.
