The "post Soviet States" as you call them, were never originally Soviet, only becoming so by absorbing Eastern Europe all the way to forcing the creation of East Germany. The USSR could not have fought back without Western Military aid. Many Eastern European states are thriving today far beyond what they could have achieved under Soviet subjugation and corruption.
