  3. This indicates that China had been over-optimistic in their belief that passenger volume will exponentially increase once this high-speed train operates. China may have deep pockets to subsidize a money-losing venture but it was not inexhaustible. The economic downturn simply exposed the unsustainabilty of the system. What now, then? Maybe they should ask fellow BRICS members to invest in this HSR. Saudi Arabia has money. So is Iran. Even Cuba, Venezuela, Turkey, Pakistan and Belarus can chip in to save Xi Jinping's baby.
