That ridiculous demand was just an excuse to demand more money from him. Drink the water or shell out 80k USD. Humiliate himself or pay. They were boxing him into a situation thinking he will have to choose one or another. Fortunately, he chose a third option: walk away and keep his self-respect.

A Chinese professional lady like that would sound like a typical American woman : "I'm a strong, independent woman, and don't need a man".

Money, money. Everything is all about and revolves around money. Imagine negotiating and haggling right in the middle of the wedding ceremony because one party is demanding a fixed amount of money. It seems the party of the bride was using an absurd gesture to extort more money from the groom. Even raising a family is a transactional business in China.

Even the groom sounds incredulous when told that it is a custom on the side of the bride's family. This highlights how marriages have been a matter of business transactions in China. A man can never have a family if he can't pay upfront. In China, marriages are just two people of opposite sex paired for convenience and reputation it will purportedly brings to the families. The groom never knew her bride well, her familes, neither their customs.

The women learned how to transact from their American women counterparts. 6-6-6.
