They're brainwashed into focusing on the one aspect and are told it's evil, so when they attack it, they see themselves as heroes standing up for something. But, in fact, they've only become the monsters they hunt. It's like the Salem Witch Trials. Countless men and women hanged or burned at the stake for practicing Paganism because Christianity fearmongered it as devil worship.
