Now all we need is to reverse the last 13 yrs of defence cuts so that we have an Army big enough to defend us rather than one that is now smaller than it was at the time of Waterloo in 1815!

I never watch the BBC, guys like RUSI give a far more accurate picture. MoD has massive procurement problems with delays and over spends, just look at Ajax, £4 billion spent, 5 yrs late and still not in service. We have 43 F-35 ordered instead on the original 138, apparently the RAF are now only getting 60 to 80 or the RN with only half the escorts originally planned for the carrier groups. We need to spend 3% for the next 10yrs to rebuild the forces, this government struggles to do 2%! even Labour were spending 2,5% in 2010. @importantjohn

Well, we could certainly get rid of the 8000+ "equality & diversity" managers in the NHS for a start! If you knew anything about history you would know that weak defence is paid for in lives. @HydroSnips

Only with "creative accounting" and Poland is scheduled to pass it next year. The key issue with defence is not what your allies spend but what your enemies spend, just look at the growth of the Chinese navy for example. @importantjohn

We have the 5th largest economy in the world! The first duty of government is the protection and security of its citizens. Do you really think Putin would have invaded Ukraine if they had kept their nuclear weapons??? @korpiz

Are you completely thick? or haven't you noticed things like a war in Ukraine or the massive build up in the Chinese Navy. 90% of our trade moves by sea btw. @gaim44

72500 by 2026, no wonder the US says we are no longer a Tier 1 force! @tomhenry897

Wtf are you talking about? @tomhenry897

So even an idiot like you should be able to understand that 72500 (projected army size by 2026) is smaller than 250000!!! Learn some maths. @meme4one

On the other hand when we do develope excellent kit like the TSR2 we cancel it for political reasons, waste millions ordering the F-111 then cancel that! @davidclerihew3539

Since no one can predict where in the world we will have to fight we have to be prepared for all contingencies, after all no one predicted the Falklands! Given that we only just hit the NATO minimum of 2% I do not see how you can say it is well enough funded. We need 3% for the next 10 yrs to repair the damage of relentless defence cuts. @davidclerihew3539

And look at the mess that made in Libya when Cameron tried it, the ultimate decider in every war is still boots on the ground. Also don't forget the RAF has only 6 frontline squadrons, about the same number of planes as a single US carrier! @MrDodgeNDive

That is my point! @re1v3r

True, after all they only have 8000 "equality & diversity" officers and are currently struggling to recruit another 224, these are SUCH important posts and absolutely VITAL to patient care in the NHS they should all be paid at least £50k a year! (opps, I bet they already are!) @Aconspiracyofravens1

If history has taught us anything it's that weak defence and appeasement result in war! I totally agree about "waste" the MoD has an appalling record on procurement but the biggest waste is on the NHS, what the ** do they need over 8000 "equality & diversity" posts for example, apart from ticking boxes? @korpiz

True but there is a limit. In Afghanistan we tried to hold Helmand with 10000 troops, when the USMC took over they had 30000 but couldn't hold it either. @gobimurugesan2411

What a stupid comment! How do you stop someone like Hitler or Putin when they invade another country without one? @ChicanoBarbarian13

I totally agree, just look at the cost overruns on HS2 or the £4 billion spent on Ajax which was due in service in 2018 but is still "in trials"! A great shame Wallace did not stand for the Tory leadership, he just might have got a grip. @kohvazein7798

Since Switzerland is always neutral (while making money from both sides) that is academic. You only need a large army when fighting a land war, even in 1914 the BEF was 200000 and we paid in blood in Afghanistan for the ridiculously small numbers, we tried to hold Helmand with 10000 men and failed, the USMC couldn't even hold it with 30000! @markchisholm2657

So the Navy won the Falklands, Northern Ireland, Iraq and Afghanistan??? that's a new one on me. @DM-xh7bo

However good your "tech" it cannot be in 2 places at once. Today they announced the RN have sent a destroyer to the Gulf, the US sent 3. 90% of world trade moves by sea yet we have only 19 major surface units. There is a good possibility that we could be facing Russia, the world's biggest nuclear power with a large, battle experienced army, likely to soon be a million men!. What must be improved is MoD financial control, look at Ajax, $4billion so far, 5 yrs late and only just entering service! @richardroberts957
