I do prefer the system we have here in NZ. Ahead of an election, everyone on the electoral roll is sent a letter with includes a credit-card sized card you take along to your polling station when you vote and use as ID. It doesn't have a photo, just your name and some basic details they can use to find your on the station's copy of the electoral roll and mark you as having voted. There is even a TV campaign that's run to help make sure people are aware of what they need to do. The Electoral Commission also has their own colour for branding (orange), which none of the political parties are allowed to use, so people know who they're dealing with. And yes, a couple of parties have tried using orange as their colour, and been immediately smacked down for it.
