  1. To correct an assertion made in the debate. All health services are not free at the point of use in all western countries. Eg, GP services are NOT free at the point of use in Australia. (Public hospitals are and are good and prompt for serious illness, not so much for things like cataract removal, and wait times for other than heart/strike/serious cancer are long.) Larger new (ironically US style and often US funded) GP clinics are free but these are not widespread. The local GPs in my area and in many others (irrespective of total income of the area) are only free to people on benefits (pensions -government age pensions are means tested in Australia - or unemployment benefits) and some do not charge children under 12 regardless of parental income). As a 70+ yr old self funded retiree on an income that is less than an average salary I pay $40+ for each consultation with my (good) GP. Her total bill is more than that - the difference is paid by the state’s Medicare system. My UK friends’ experiences and wait times to see a GP in some areas would not be tolerated here.
