Russian supply officers get to pocket any money they don't spend on food. Which has an interesting effect on food quality...🤔 In the US the Supply Officer is required to spend a certain amount per servicemember per year, if they haven't spent enough the guys get surf and turf several times in September. Mind you, it is like $10 per day (or was when I was in service), but it is enough for decent chow once you are cooking industrial amounts of food.

I think that is a case of Authoritarian vs Democratic government militaries. Authoritarian governments don't want junior officers taking initiative because having a bunch of guys with guns thinking for themselves is bad for them.

@uradeus2808 yeah I imagine Ukraine will send less experienced troops to control the territory and pull the experienced guys south. If Ukraine takes Mariupol back they have nearly encircled not just Kherson, but Crimea, as supplies will either have to use the one bridge or travel by water (which is pretty dangerous these days).

@mangobanana7195 a LOT of comparisons with Vietnam, though the US had a much better chance in Vietnam than Russia in Ukraine. I would point out that some Americans fled to Canada...

@alekosalekadis6095 Russians certainly don't want to march to the front, but they haven't taken anything back. Ukraine stopped to digest what they took (an area over 3 times the size of Luxembourg). But once that is done another part of the Russian line will collapse. Russia under Putin is a joke, and the whole world is laughing.

@ArmedSpaghet Ukraine wants the Russians to leave, to preserve the civilians and the city. They just want the Russians to leave on foot, knowing they were beaten.

@laszlokaestner5766 as others have pointed out, Ukraine wants the Russian troops to flee, just without their equipment. Targetting them while they run away sends the wrong message. We want to encourage Russians to know that running away is always the safest option, that it is the first thing to do in any military conflict. We want to encourage it, train them in it. The only thing better than a Russian soldier trained to run away is a Russian soldier who has been captured.

@klaasdeboer8106 yeah, 10 Euro isn't exactly 10 dollars but once you are buying industrial quantities of food costs go way down. On the flip side cooking industrial quantities of food can reduce quality...

Take Mariupol and make all supplies to Southern Russian occupied areas arrive via Crimean bridge or water-making those supplies easy targets. Including supplies for troops at the nuke plant.

Crimea is not economically viable as part of Russia unless Russia keeps at least south Kherson. If Crimea can't get Ukrainian water it dies, it is too expensive to truck in water. I don't know if Ukraine would sell water to an independent Crimea, they might.

One thing to remember is that the Russian military available for combat in Ukraine is fairly small. The "million man" Russian army is half conscript troops who can't fight outside of Russia because this isn't a "war" according to Putin. Of the remaining troops, half are either not suitable for combat (e.g. the missile techs manning the nukes) or are needed to guard other fronts (e.g. Chinese border). That left Putin maybe 200,000 Russian troops he could send in, including Marines and VDV. He has probably lost a third of them, and has no real replacements. So he has to use LPR/DPR militia, Wagner group mercenaries, in theory Chechnyans (but not really). Not exactly top tier troops. I think most of what he has left are either in Kherson or Donetsk, so the other lines are quite weak.

Russian troops, as a general rule, do not stay in service after their first enlistment. The trops have horrible hazing and are treated horribly so they don't stay. That was even before the war. So while a lot of troops in, for instance, the US stay in 20 years, meaning lots of 40 year old troops, Russia doesn't have that. The lack of NCOs/experienced troops is a big problem for Russia, leading to very low quality troops and leadership.

Yeah, the Russian military is very top-down, with even Captains and Majors (well, Russian equivalents) unable to take actions without orders. Technically they can't retreat without orders, but that just means they can't do an orderly retreat without orders, soldiers rout whether you like it or not. Ukraine figured that out and has been targeting Russian commanders (Russia's primary targets are Journalists and EMTs, the former to prevent reporting of war crimes and the latter to maximize civilian casualties). When attacked, the Russians frantically call their commanders, who just got killed by a Himars missile, asking for orders. If they have no orders they stay in place. Can't retreat, can't reinforce the unit next to them, they just sit tight and hope.

@wolfgangpagel6989 I'm from Alaska. I have been outdoors in -40 degree weather with 40 mph winds for about 50 minutes. I know cold. You are obviously not aware of what real winter can be like. The Russians got frostbite last March, they will lose limbs to it this winter. Side note, it wasn't my 40-40 experience that led to permanent damage to my feet, as I had good cold weather gear that day, about $500 worth. It was going outside in cheap shoes which let snow get next to my socks, melt, and give me wet feet in comparatively balmy 10 degrees F/-12 C

At this point I'm trying to figure out if you are legitimately ignorant or if you are making a desperate argument hoping that if you can convince some random strangers on the internet you can change reality. Frostbite and hypothermia are not going to care about your arguments, they are just going to cripple any Russian troops who don't have the right gear.

Interrogation Files I actually donated my cold weather gear to Ukraine. I am no longer inactive reserve so I didn't need to keep it in my closet. Plus I may have gained a few pounds in the 7 years since I served and a lot of it didn't fit any more...sigh.
