@Winters004 in the US civil war Sherman's march was delayed by a series of trenches dug by slaves. Sherman would have to keep one part of his force facing the trenches while sending another part around to flank it. Then the confederates would retreat to the next earthworks.

@wojszach4443 I agree. My point was that the manpower Russia would need was essentially "all military aged men and a third of the women." So it wasn't just "massive cost" it was "no one working in a whole lot of jobs." Every other part of the Russian economy would be struggling from lack of labor as well as the cost of supporting those troops.

For the record there are 6,900,000 Russian males between the ages of 15-24, so the number of 18-27 is similar. So every Russian male of those ages plus another 2.1 million women (about a third). On the plus side, those women are very likely to get pregnant, which the Russians really need.
