One theory is that the Ukraine war is a "wag the dog" operation. When your country is at war any criticism of the government or leadership is equated to support for the nation's "enemies," and thus a desire for your country's troops to be defeated and killed. A weak leader who thinks they are losing power may start a war to soludify support, regardless of what is best for his nation. This can be especially true if he thinks it will be an easy war. Putin thought the war would last a week. Now he is trapped. To admit a mistake would make him a bad leader, but there is no sign of Ukraine offering any peace short of Russia returning home. So Putin will continue to spend lives and fortune to keep the war going while praying for something to change and give him something he can call a victory. Even if Russia actually gets nothing. What matters is that Putin can claim a win and argue that the huge losses ofilitary power, the deaths of 10-15,000 Russian soldiers and injuries of 35-55,000 and the massive economic contraction of the Russian economy was "worth it."
