Russia is also not the USSR. They have only 144 million people, and are aging badly (1.4 births/woman I think). They have about 7 million men aged 18-27. 7 million sounds like a lot but the US equivalent is something like 25 million. The US has 3-4 times the military age manpower as Russia, Russia is no longer the "infinate manpower, bury their foe in bodies," state they used to be.

@michaelpettersson4919 the women in the Russian held Donbas call the Russian draft something like "coffin brigades," I don't think the women of the Donbas region like Putin or his pawns.

@blank3041 I didn't disagree with you, I provided more information. Not all comments are praise or disagreement, sometimes you agree but want to expand the conversation. A lot of people think that the vast numbers of Russian artillery means they can't be beaten. But range and accuracy matter too.

@russki4780 where does Putin get 880,000 occupation troops? You need 1 soldier per 50 civilians for occupation (20/1000). So Putin needs 44,000,000/50=880,000 troops just for occupation, in addition to combat forces. Now granted, maybe Putin's plan is ethnic cleansing, to kill or drive out most of the population of the areas he wants to take. It looks like he has killed or driven out 75-90% of the population of towns and cities taken after March 1st. Obviously mostly ethnic Russian, Russian speaking Ukrainians getting killed or driven out. Looting and starving the population of the Donbas probably helps with that goal. Yeah, I guess by obliterating the population of Ukraine, massive civilian deaths on the order of Putin's mentor Hitler, Russia can win in Ukraine...

@ericconnor8419 any Ukrainians who wanted Russia to take their cities in the Donbas are being used as cannon fodder by the Russians.

I expect Ukraine will follow the Finnish model, every city will have several Mariupol steel mill style bomb shelters to turn the whole nation into a web of fortresses.

@blank3041 the problem for Russia is that they are mosly destroying old Russian style Ukrainian arty, which the Ukrainians are running out of ammo for anyway. The NATO guns outrange the Russian arty, so unless they use rockets or get lucky they can't shoot back. Leaving a situation that is a lot like a sniper slowly taking out 10 guys with machine guns from outside their range.

Also the more territory that Russia holds, the more Ukrainian partisans they have in their rear areas. The more Russian troops have to be diverted to occupation instead of combat and the more Russians who go home in body bags with no tale of fighting the enemy, just being poisoned or knifed or blown up by ordinary people defending their homes.

One thing Russia seems to have forgotten is how effective Chechnyan "terrorists" were in attacking Russia. Chechnyans look and sound different from Russians but were still able to go anywhere and hit anywhere in Russia. Ukrainians look and (with a little effort) sound like Russians. Even more amusing, Russia is sending Ukrainians they don't trust not to be partisans to the far east region. Now there are a bunch of unexplained explosions and fires in the far east region...hmm
