@Kereru What rot! If you choose to speak TeReo that is your choice even though it is not even your tribal dialect.. There should always be a choice to learn or not to. When TeReo was first rolled out by the English linguist and scholar Samuel Lee with the aid of Hongi Hika in 1860 the ones who opposed its use the most was Maori themselves... many Chiefs banned their children learning it..they saw it would be responsible for their own tribal dialects being lost...and this is exactly what has happened. I am delighted that at long last (hopefully not too late) more and more in lighted Maori have realised this and are trying to restore the original tribal languages of their peoples...and so learn who they really are and to honour their ancestors. TeReo only represented a handful of northern tribal dialects. I challenge you to learn research and learn your own true tribal dialect and stop trying to force feed a made up language on those who have no interest in it. I am a 7th generation kiwi by the way who had 2 ancestors signatories of the treaty... one Maori one European.. Te Reo was only spoken 20 years after the treaty was signed.

@RaewynTairi Along with all the other children of non English speaking migrants .. the system being used was total immersion and only English was allowed at school and on the playground... this was agreed by many Chiefs who saw the way forward for their children was in learning English... the language of trade and commerce. You need to do a lot more research and not just the activist rewritten beat up version of our history. Modern Maori used the same method of total immersion when teaching their TeReo of recent time... we will see what future descendants have to say about their methods!

@Paul_Rich The thing is TeReo is not Maori language... rather it was a created language and the work of the English linguist scholar Samuel Lee with the aid of Hongi Hika using a handful of northern Maori tribal dialects... this was created to give Maori a united voice in 1860 for trade and communication with the settlers. Prior to this there were many tribal dialects spoken in NZ. It is a falsehood to claim it represents all Maori as many tribal dialects have no phrases or words within TeReo.

@janetkamau1916 A lovely post but it the rhetoric is about being "forced" to learn a language that you do not wish to learn... e.g. nurses, doctors etc. all being forced to learn TeReo before being allowed to work in their jobs.. this sort of demand is not acceptable. TeReo is a created language by English linguist and scholar Samuel Lee with the aid of Hongi Hika in 1860 to give a united voice for Maori in trade and communication... prior to that every tribe spoke their own dialects. So do not image you have learnt a language that represents all Maori in NZ ... TeReo doesn't as it was made up from a handful of northern tribal dialects only. The call is English first on signage as the official language of the country followed by TeReo and not the other way around which is the case now.

@RaewynTairi No but we are bullied and forced to learn it... with some employers insisting on applicants knowing it.. I am a 7th generation kiwi with 2 ancestors at the treaty table, one European one Maori... I know the origins of the created TeReo and how many Maori opposed it....everyone must have the choice to learn or not to learn and never be forced. I believe it should appear in signage but below English which is the official language of the country and the majority can speak and understand... then followed by Te Reo... how it is now is an absolute nonsense - especially in medical centres and government departments.

@RaewynTairi No just in some cases not give you a job because of it!

At last a leader who listens to the majority of the country and what they want. The previous government never got it that it is a government"s job to govern for the majority of the country and not just to govern for the small racist and extremist minority groups. We look forward to enjoying our country again freed from the yoke of the extreme controlling left. Keep up the good work PM the majority of the country is behind you.
