Comments by "Neodym" (@neodym5809) on "Hydrogen: Checkmate to OIL’s Dominance? - VisualPolitik EN" video.
We Tank gasoline everyday, which not only burns quiet as good, but also is cancerous and toxic. And a battery on fire is the nightmare of every fire fighter. Hydrogen is the least worst of the three.

The EU started a project called the hydrogen strategy to transform its industry towards this route. The political will is there, the money is going to be spend. I think hydrogen is a far more elegant technology than batteries or fossil fuels. Its use is much more diverse and it is safer than the alternatives.

@headcrab4090 the EU is toying around with the idea. They see northern African nations as profiteers, supplying Europe with solar generated energy and hydrogen.
2
@Aspis7 well, then we work with it on quiet the different scale. Hope you succeed!
2
So most of Northern Europe, America and Asia would have sufficient water sources to satisfy their needs.
2
Short term, yes. But if hydrogen production is established on a grand scale, it becomes competitive. And there are enough alternative uses that it has a future, mainly as a versatile use for excess energy caused by solar/wind.
2
What is the issue with thermoelectrics and hydrogen?
2
Well, he has to defend his strategy to put all his chips on one technology.
2
It is rather simple: electrocute water.
1
Another application is to add hydrogen in natural gas pipelines. The European ones can accept around 10% hydrogen.
1
So is gasoline, which is also toxic and causes cancer.
1
@PikaPilot but gasoline is?
1
@Aspis7 what is so difficult about it? I work with it on a regular basis. It is non toxic, as long as you have decent ventilation there is no risk of an explosion. I have a lot of chemicals I highly dislike to work with, but hydrogen is none of them.
1
@Aspis7 the Hydrogen torch is my main use of hydrogen to melt quartz. I have a question for you, what is more dangerous: gasoline or hydrogen?
1
@Aspis7 one question: what materials do you test? (Curiosity on my part). We use valves/tubes/torches certified for hydrogen use (I know this molecule quiet easily diffuses into metal), but with the right equipment we never had any issues.

The building for Hickley Point C in the UK will increase energy costs significantly for the next decades. It is already more expensive than renewables.
1
As we drive cars with efficiencies below 20%, it wasn’t an issue so far, was it?
1
@turningpoint4238 true, but not an exclusive issue of hydrogen. Fuel cells in particular have a great energy efficiency. And if you see excess energy from renewables as the main source, the issue disappears. An battery is fully charged at one point, an electrolysis plant is never fully charged.
1
@turningpoint4238 hydrogen can be fed in pipelines, even today’s pipelines for natural gas are sufficient. And hydrogen is extremely diverse in its use. It can not only used for energy storage, but there are already plants in operation that produce methanol out of hydrogen and CO2. The idea behind is that this not only replaces oil as a energy source, but also as a source for the chemical industry. The initial costs to build up the infrastructure are high, but the moment they exist hydrogen becomes omnipresent due to its versatility.
1
But the much more dangerous gasoline is ok?
1
Already happening. EU started a giant project last year.
1
@RS-ls7mm EU a country? Just a little information: the country that most relies on nuclear energy, France, is a member of the EU. You could not be more wrong
1
@RS-ls7mm it was You referring to the Eu as the country.
1
@Ovidiu_I. platinum is used in every combustion car in the catalyst. And fuel cells are expensive because unlike batteries, they are not mass produced.
