@Journey_to_who_knows indeed. Ethiopia was really only one dedicated ally away from making the step to world player. African history would have been so much different.

It is not at all impossible that the Empress had her own personal military units; she had a power base, and personal forces would support that. Especially so when she was the only effective sovereign.

@JohnDoe-sw1rs I suspect that would have created Ethiopian hegemony in the region. Probably would have made them a major focus for "The Great Game," with European powers competing to seduce them into alliance, or working diligently to destabilize them. Or both, simultaneously. Certainly, Britain would have been KEENLY aware of a major regional player in a position to interdict (or defend) their lifeline to India.
