  3. That beautiful structure, with all that amazing woodwork, stonework, stained glass, etc, and replaced with yet another ugly plain high rise. NYC could have been such a beautiful city had they not torn down all these amazing buildings and replaced them with ugly concrete, glass and steel - buildings that you drive by and don`t even notice because they all look the same and have no architectural significance. Blah blah blah boring.

  4. It`s so refreshing to see a city that actually kept some of it`s beautiful old homes and modernized them to meet present day needs instead of pulling them down and replacing them with ugly modern structures. A pity more cities didn`t see the value of this type of repurposing.

  7. All the chairs in the office and the entire parlor set are all John Henry Belter pieces. The parlor set is carved in the Rosalie pattern. All the rooms looked very comfy.

  12. That was a beautiful house- luckily I wasn't the one who had to clean it. Everything was covered with stuff, which I suppose was the trend at that time, especially for the rich. Too bad there were no kids to pass it on to.

  14. I think it goes without saying, I'd save all the millionaires rows if at all possible. The architechural interest alone would add so much to our cities. It's a shame more of the mansions weren't repurposed for another use.

  16. The interiors of this home are some of the best I`ve seen yet. The woodwork and plasterwork are both incredible and it`s so fortunate that it has all survived so well. Thanks for posting, Ken.

  17. I see no good reason why this mansion should have been demolished. As it was left to the museum, it should have been their responsibility to see to it's preservation. Can you imagine what a beautiful library or art gallery this would have made? Or even the entrance and lobby it would have made to a grand hotel like they have in Europe. Now it's just one more ugly highrise that nobody would give a second look. I always thought I'd like to leave some of my antigue collection to a museum, thinking it would be appreciated and become part of their permanent collection. But more and more I find that's not true, that they often sell bequeaths without a second thought. So I will never leave anything to a museum. Instead I'll leave it to someone who will appreciate it.

  19. I was there shortly after he died and toured the house. It still had his record collection sitting next to the TVs in the basement room just as he left them. it was a very strange feeling knowing he had been there not so long ago in those very rooms. The house seems more sterile now. Back then it seemed to have a more lived in personal feeling. The day we were there, they brought in his jet from the airport. They had taken off the tail and the end of the wings and pulled it all the way from the airport up Elvis Presley Boulevard and backed it into place. There were guys up on the top lifting stop lights over it as they came up the street so they wouldn`t drag on the jet. It was very cool. And of course we saw his grave out back of the house- that was a very somber sight.

  20. That seems typical- the houses in England still stand but the one in the US was demolished. Such a shame. The interiors were outstanding, especially the woodwork in the stair hall.

  57. I love everything about this house- the warm woodwork, the way the rooms seem to be cozy, even though they`re huge. I would have loved to have grown up here. It would have been so much fun as a kid exploring all the nooks and crannies. Have you noticed how, in so many cases, the people that build these magnificent places never get to enjoy them for long? Such a shame but at least we get to enjoy and admire them.

  58. I believe a lot of the furnishings were sold to Hollywood studios to be used as props in movies. Herter Brothers supplied much of the furniture for this house, and I have seen some of the pieces in various movies over the years. The movie "Pollyanna" and one of the Sherlock Holmes movies in particular. One thing I did notice about this house was that there were very few paintings on the walls of the public rooms. Usually at this time, the very rich covered their walls completely with works of art to show off their apparent taste and worldliness (and money). These walls seemed kind of bare.

  59. We always hear about cities talking about progress, moving forward. To do it, they invariably demolish their history, architecture, and anything to do with the past. In its place, they build, in this case, a Chinese restaurant, a gas station, and many open lots. This is progress? In the 1960`s, it was all about Urban Renewal- tear down the old and build all new to make it better. Really? All they did was demolish beautiful old buildings and put up eyesores, thus cheapening the look of the towns and cities. This is progress? They call them developers- they`re not, they`re destroyers. My hometown lost so many of its beautiful Victorian downtown buildings and in their place were built some of the most God-awful looking buildings you could imagine thus ruining the whole esthetic of the main street and business section of town. The sad thing is it can never be replaced and we all suffer the loss.

  108. You can really see in the photos how Richardson designed the rooms so that you can only get a glimpse of the next room through the doorways by the way he placed them. By the outside it looks pretty plain, but the inside is a whole different story. I love the stairs and the wallpapers.
