  1. That's an idea I might have come up with when I was 11 or 12, when I didn't have any understanding of the relative scales we are dealing with. The oceans are MUCH bigger than the total number of ships and boats compared to your toy boat in the bathtub. I remember thinking of a similar problem, once I learned the sun's lifespan was finite, and that it would turn into a red giant once it uses up the hydrogen in its core. I thought at the time why not make hydrogen on Earth and send it into the sun, completely oblivious to just how much larger the sun is than Earth. Even if there was a way to devote all our resources to making hydrogen and somehow overcome the difficulty to inject hydrogen into the core, it would be such a miniscule amount that it would make no practical difference.
