  1.  @etrice25  Lots of Americans do speak German (and other foreign languages) with a distinct American accent, but I worked on having accent-free German. In general, no matter where I visit or live, people don't label me as American and they are always surprised to find out that I'm a native Texan. In Switzerland, I've gotten asked if I'm from Brazil or South Africa in addition to Germany and Austria. Or, when I was in Egypt, people thought I was Greek and when I was in Greece, they thought I was Egyptian. When I worked in the Caribbean, people assumed that I was a Caribbean native who had been gone a while but returned, faking an American accent. But, I have an ambiguous look working for me and that makes assimilation easy. Honestly, the only giveaway that I'm American is my passport. Your results may vary!

  2. You can eliminate an accent. I live in a German-speaking part of Switzerland and when I'm speaking German (which is most of the time) people never guess that I'm American. I've been asked if I'm from Germany or Austria multiple times.
