@mocash3817 I'm a USA citizen (not married to a Swiss) and I got my C Permit after 5 years in Switzerland because there are special conditions for USA and Canadian citizens.

@feralfraulein The info is tricky to find, but it was listed on the instruction sheet for the application in my Kanton. It specifically said that USA and Canadian citizens can apply for the C permit (permanent residency) after only 5 years due to bilateral agreements.

@sues.3527 I've read in different articles that Americans and Canadians can apply for Naturalization after 5 years (with the prerequisite of having the C permit), but I will call the SEM today to find out if that is true.

@sues.3527 So, based on everything you listed in your comment, why do you think that Americans are at a massive disadvantage as compared to EU citizens? For my situation I was already Fluent in German (C1 level) and had a job in Switzerland before I moved here and have been living at the same address continuously for 5+ years. The rest is just formalities.

@sues.3527 Up to now, my USA citizenship hasn't been a hindrance to living and working in other countries or traveling freely. In the example of getting the Niederlassungsbewillingung C, it was actually advantageous to the tune of 5 years.
