The first 40 years of the show were equally as impressive, there's less humour (at times, some of the docs were amazingly funny), but the show always had fantastic effects and sets for it's age. It's worth watching old seasons simply for the dynamic, it was before the time war (which happened in the gap between 1989-2005). The Doctor was never alone, just a rebel - unlike the new stuff. The older stuff introduces you to why there's a love/hate with the Sontarans, why the Daleks were created and why the Doctor and the Master came to be.

The only explanation I've come up with about our accent is that it's rough around the edges, it's like an accent that was put in to production when it was only 70% finished.
