  1. If the only thing needed for promotion is longevity, then your best talent will never rise to make you more profitable. And if the only people who are being promoted are the ones at work 16 hours, well, they're not finding a spouse, having kids, or creating the next generation of Japanese people. Japan is failing because its government is unable to handle the corporations. Want corporations to grow and become more productive, pass a law that punishes any company where their non-management employees work more than 40 hours a week and punish them with extreme fines. I guarantee, that corporations and their management will get really innovative once they know they can't blackmail their employees into working more than 40 hours a week. At which point they'll terminate unproductive and useless managers, CEOs, etc... (Forced innovation would do wonders for Japan's future.)
