I beg your pardon? I believe the words are duty, honor and country. Vanity has nothing to do with it.

@brendonbewersdorf986 well actually never carried any. And then there's the whole matter of this being a first generation carrier and first generation of aircraft design for it. Naval aviation is a bit of an evolutionary process. And the Germans were very late to the game.

He's doing just fine Freddy.

@freddyfox5002 it was a bit of unrequested and unneeded commentary.

Agreed 😞

@keefymckeefface8330 it's not callous, it's the truth. When you raise your hand take the oath and you take the check. You come with the expectation that someday you going to have to pay.

That's a very long and complex question. For many reasons both financial and political most commercial shipping has turned to flags of convenience. Meaning they are registered in Nations such as Panama or Liberia rather than fly the US or UK flag. That's why the merchant Marine force is so small today. The decline of the large steel industries is also another big market Factor. There's very few yards in the United States doing non-military construction contracts anymore. The cost of Labor is just not competitive for the United States or Great Britain.

@drewmac63 in their defense, most navies probably have less live fire practice in 2022 then they did then.

@mallry1 there have been advances in Long range artillery. Both in range and accuracy. You would not probably see ships going above 155 mm in size. And there is already technology to have guns in that range with the ability to hit targets at 100 miles.

@brendonbewersdorf986 I think it's probably comparable to the learning curve that the modern Chinese Navy is doing with their carrier development. As their ships and their aircraft capabilities increase so have their air groups compliments size.

😞Is there a HMS Jervis Bay or Rawalpindi in service or planned for the RN?

There's a reason why the Victoria Cross is rarely awarded.

@phaasch it's blunt, but it's the truth. Always has been.
