About this carrier building question. 5 or 6 hulls are nice, but where are the pilots and planes? Aircraft production is not reaching a peak till mid war. Pilot training takes maybe a year? The USN and USMC can't fill those air groups in pre war conditions.

@themightynanto3158 Leadership doesn't change the odds much. Still alone and outgunned.

@Commander_35 Nope. Surface ships sank few merchant ships to mater.
2
@thepan8282 They are not modular. Yes, you tear down the superstructure.
2
@KatyushaLauncher Surface Raiders had limited success. The U-boats are main tool to hit convoys. The battleships are a side show.

@captain61games49 When planes became weapons. WW1.
2
@hendrikbootha7285 To what end? The main mission is commerce raiding. U-boats are the tool for that. Adding more crusiers without destroyer support changes little. They cannot beat the RN.
2
@hendrikbootha7285 Same answer. First, they still lack free access to the Atlantic. Next, with code breaking; convoys can be routed arround them. A dozen cruisers can't battle the Home Fleet. And all use manpower and fuel the other forces need. Hitter needs results to support that ship program. I doubt they can return the investment.

@Pentagon6519 That cheaper option is likely it will be sunk in a future live fire. The fire and structure damage are not worth spending on.

@bkjeong4302 Oiler support? True... Both need refuel at sea.

me hee Off hand? You can go back to 1667 and the Dutch raid on the Medway. Chain was used to provide protection to English ships there. The US Military Academy is famous for being a site for a chain blocking ships going up the Hudson River. The South in the US Civil War used chain and mines on various rivers as well. A torpedo net is a take on the original idea....

me hee Slave ships? Here is a quick link. https://youtu.be/6PwnMHkOUxY

@lamwen03 The Congress was not gung ho for defense spending. The current one even less so. As the training? Doubling or tripling output pre war is very optimistic.
1
Even worse is air crew. There is no way pre war to fully train 6 air groups.
1
@calvingreene90 A given? This is still the Depression and a Neutral America. Defense spending goes only so far.
1
@calvingreene90 That build up took time. Even in 2020 we don't have the ability to fill 6 air wings. You don't even have more than Ranger to train on in early 1942. Teaching basic flight and being carrier qualified and combat ready took time.
1
@calvingreene90 The Navy still has the Fight with the Army for defense. And the nation is still pushing Neutrality.
1
@calvingreene90 Huh? We change topics? Why are you talking RAF and the AVG?

Fletcher wasn't to blame for Savo Island.

@papajohnloki Some of that criticism may be misplaced. Have you watched this lecture on Fletcher? https://youtu.be/ltDL-JKO70E
