There was no lack of ships. Just a lack of takers. Many today face scrapyard or sinkex.

@adammclean4871 The Usaf has a it's version of The Mothball fleet; "The Boneyard " at Davis-Monathan AFB in Arizona. Planes are kept in desert storage there. USN and USMC planes get stored as well.

@skeletonwguitar4383 Easy answer? In general, down for all services with the end of conflict in Afghanistan. Some Navy projects like the new sub and frigates will get funding. Stuff like railguns and the LCS will die....

@TheRWS96 You missing a ton..... "Do you know what makes these ships go up? FUNDING! That's what makes your ships go up. NO BUCKS, NO BUCK RODGERS....." - from the "Right Stuff" 1983...... Mothball ships are more frozen like Han Solo, than museum conditions.

@billfitzpatrick209 They have different battle stations based on threat. For surface action, the crew is not on deck.

All the ships are on freshwater other than Pearl Harbor. That helps...

@gregorywright4918 I guess that is why they store ships there long term. Low salt content.

The cargo and tanker ships were used. But, they were made obsolete by container ships and the supertanker. Warships have little merchant use.

@adamfrank5510 The draft..... The Navy downsized after the war.

@beigethursday1352 That makes no sense. Those are not dual purpose guns.
