By November 1941, we were already in a undeclared war in the Atlantic. The USS Ruben James had been sunk by a U Boat. The 4th Marines and the China Gunboats were leaving China. Reinforcements to the Phillpines were on going. MIdway and Wake Island were beefing up. The RN had Force Z in route to Singapore. Basically the charcoal of war just needed a match. If not Pearl Harbor, something else would have sparked.

Off hand, changing ship composition really doesn't change the problem. You still have a unit Which is far from home. Outnumbered by Japanese and the Royal Navy. And lack coaling spots. Von Spee is doomed in any case.

@jonasholmberg6610 For home use perhaps. But commerical use and ship/ rail transport use goes back to 1882. In fact, even Titanic had refrigeration as far back as 1912. http://www.titanic-theshipmagnificent.com/synopsis/chapter18/

@wcweathe Well for most of that period the RN specialized in Anti Sub warfare. Along with other Nato forces at sea and the secret US Sosus system, the Brits would fair ok. But it depends on the length of war and if it stayed non nuclear.

Pricey, ugly as sin, and can not do the basic job it was made for.

The biggest thing as far as diet was probably Refrigeration. Ships diets for centuries mostly dried and salted preserved Foods. Now fresh and frozen food were available for use.

The Zero fighter had outstanding range. It also had great speed. Because with lightweight design, it did not require a huge engine. The great misunderstanding of the Zero, is fighting philosophy and tactics. Allied Fighters fought defensively. While the Zero fighter is best used in an aggressive offensive attack Manor. That on top of Japanese philosophy on combat is why armor is rejected. It's down fall was lack of upgrades and pilot quality.

@cameronkelly8739 Your limited by facilities as well. Docks and drydocks are only so big. And ships in New York had to clear bridges.

Are you asking could the UK of the Cold war fought another Battle of the Atlantic?

They had the brainstorms working. Just lacked the tools. It took the planes another 10 years to develop into war winning tools.

@Frederik Nielsen Some call that a weakness. But if used offensively, and agressively, it is a plus. Ninja vs. Armored Knight. The Ninja traded Armor for speed and agility. With the right tactics and weapon they defeat the defense minded Knights.

@Tuning3434 What you call cannon foder. They saw as a proud death in service of the Empire.

@Tuning3434 Agreed. No debate. Just giving the other side of coin.

@sarjim4381 True... But they get a R&D boost From the Germans. Had the war not turned so bad, they could have bought that tech to production. Oh well...

@Drachinifel Good point. The Grumman F4F is not that more powered than the F3f. Is a better, cleaner, monoplane vs a biplane.

Fire control computers factor target distance, speed, course, wind and other factors when sending orders to the guns. Much like the human brain does for a duck hunter with a shotgun.
