USS Ranger due size and protection issues stayed in the Atlantic Fleet. While doing mostly training and aircraft ferry ops; she did see combat in Operation Torch. And later vs German forces in Norway.

On the Merchant side... The 1950's saw the introduction of container ships. This made Liberty ships obsolete. Jet travel killed the Atlantic liner trade. So they get scraped. On the warship side? Cold War threats and defense cuts means older ships get scraped for newer, less manpower ones. The NATO threat of the late 1950's was ASW. So the need for big gun surface ships faded. The naval gun fire role in Korea and Vietnam was what saved the Iowa's and the De Moines.

Who is going to crew this Navy? The population is small even today.

@toveychurchill6468 Wood surfaces provide traction in wet weather.

The Luftwaffe tried the same tech leap with jet fighters. It failed.... Up technology on U boats does not supply skilled crews. Does not end fuel shortages. And by late 1944, the U boat pens face a invasion army.

@Warspite1 Some like The USS Pennsylvania had minor damage. The sister ship to the Arizona was in Drydock during the attack. Still, at 21 knot top speed it was too slow for Carrier escort. By the time repairs and upgrades were done on the West Coast; the ADBA fleet was gone. Thus the Pennsylvania was sent on operations in the Aleutian islands.

@wiryantirta Very difficult. Ships are not modular. You have to tear down the superstructures, remove the engines, and rebuild.

@lilidutour3617 By 1944, The Battle of the Atlantic is going the Allies way. The XXI boats are too late to change the tide.

@readhistory2023 Correct... The secondary guns have a separate director system since they are dual purpose. Anti air and Anti Surface... See here...https://youtu.be/z_HUZSk8c2c

@ronaldb4885 Keep in mind Electric power development on land was just as rapid.

@douggallagher8809 (1.)Why not? (2.) Every navy is different. Nothing new there. (3.) Top speed pales issues about air group size and protection.
