Short answer.... The Iowas spent most of their career in reserve storage. The so called Mothball fleet. They were sealed up and ported in freshwater locations like Philadelphia Naval yard. Then, as needed they were reactivated. So in reality they have fewer miles on them than say the 50 year old USS Enterprise now retiring. AS for maintenance? Rust prevention, lubrication, mold prevention, pest control, bilge pumps running, etc. As to the economics? Today it is manpower costs, and logistical issues that prevent a return. They need huge crews to manually operate systems. They use old style fuels not in service. Have parts not replaceable and crews not trainned in BB systems.

@RussBeatle63 Money spent there is money taken from something else.

Navies cost money, and do little for a nation of internal problems.

Keeping a hull clean of marine growth does more to aid performance than playing with engines or props.

As to Mitchell? His only effect on the Navy was funding. As in 1947 when the USAF was formed, it caused fights over funding and missions. Even in the late 30's, aviation had a scouting role. Not a strike role. Float planes and flying boats were there to spot for naval gunfire & find the enemy. The airship program again was designed to scout ahead in a pre radar era. It was only about 1940, when all Navies had planes and weapons that could do real damage & equal land based planes.

It kind of comes down to crew trainning and internal design. As a example of this https://youtu.be/C2sYtq7hI74777e

One more gun. One more gun crew. Aside from that? Added weight and size to fit the 3rd gun. Other than that? They all work the same. Speed varies by crew skill.

Shauna, we did that already. Nothing..... carriers do fly planes in port or at night.

It basically comes down to crew training. The guns and optics don't varry much. Radar makes rangefinding betterbat night and in fog. But if crews do not regularly practice, equipment does not matter.
