Torpedo nets. They are booms that swing out and hold the nets.

Technology changed faster than tactics. Nobody had developed Naval aviation into a offense arm outside of wargames. Nor were aviators in command staff positions to change the traditional surface navy. Next, everyone keeps forgetting the Great Depression. All nation's held back on defense spending,

Good vs bad idea? Just technology ahead of tactics. They never got the chance to use them. Remember They are writing the books as they go.

@geoffreymowbray6789 Yes, the treaty is a factor for why these what ifs, never were. As well as economics and the general move in dissarmorment after WW1.
2
Why would you spend the money in the Great Depression? What if questions need to stay in reality.

Works for Apple computer.

What if. Woulda could a shoulda..... The desire to spend defense money was not popular or available.

@bkjeong4302 Depends on target and range. Same power the USN lacks today. Yet billions of dollars spent on the Zumwalt class.
1
The Great Depression. Do you want eat or buy old 2nd rate ships for a 3 rate Navy?
1
@geoffreymowbray6789 Damaging? In numbers perhaps. But performance wise, they are mostly obsolete ships. The money spent keeping them could go elsewhere. It also retards Research and Development.

@Alex-cw3rz Say 2 shots a minute. To give you a idea what is like.... https://youtu.be/MTW_xpK-Twc

@redtob2119 You could ask the same about the Army or Air Force? Mostly, leaders bad. Morale bad. Training, so so. So they stay in port....
1
@locomotiveAlex1996 Until you make it cost effective, nope. Right now, they are just laboratory weapons.
1
@TBone-bz9mp They are a culture of rules.

@audacityHD Duty, Honor, Country.... once you see the Enemy, no matter the odds. Fight is on. Would you like to be the Admiral who ran way?
1
@GaldirEonai Those are booms for torpedo nets in the folded position.
1
@Valentijn van Troost Those are propeller guards. They act as fenders and keep blades being damaged.
1
@strub6732 Not very. They have poor elevation and field of fire. The need for dual purpose guns made them obsolete. So most post WW1 designs shifted to turrets.
1
@christiancobb5309 It still blows up when hit.....
1
@Ponja__ It keeps you dry and warm. Try working a open gun with waves splashing?

@The_Dipship Because nobody is thinking 80 years later this would be a nice museum. Nor are most money makers or well visited. The exception are things like the USS Intrepid. Aviation is the same way. While the Smithsonian Air & Space museum is packed daily. Who goes to the USAF museum or the Naval Aviation Museum? Battlefields? Same way. Valley Forge. George Washington's great camp sits in short distance from the 2nd largest mall complex and the PA Turnpike. Everything outside the park is developed.
