The .303 bullet from that Lee-Enfield will pierce practically any type of body armour. The same goes for helmets.

@shenoyglobal I don't know if you ever served in the military, but I do know from personal experience that you rarely if ever use automatic fire in combat. I was issued with the selective fire version of the SLR, the FAL, which, according to my instructor, became a light anti-aircraft weapon on auto. You really had to fight muzzle climb with such a powerful round. You can step down from a battle rifle to an assault rifle that fires an intermediate cartridge, but then range becomes an issue. If it was an issue for US soldiers in mountainous Afghanistan, I can picture it being a problem in Kashmir as well.

@shenoyglobal The AK47 doesn't have better range than the M-4. In fact, the 5.56×45mm NATO outranges the 7.62x39mm. In Afghanistan, the Taliban switched to shooting with Dragunovs and PKMs at US soldiers. The latter couldn't respond effectively because of the inferior range of their M-4s. I'm sure the militants in Kashmir would do likewise once they realise the villagers are armed with AK47s. When the defenders have been eliminated from afar, or have expended their ammo, they'd swoop in for the kill.

@pvskrao You're making an awful lot of sense. The Lee-Enfield is probably the best all-round military bolt-action rifle ever conceived. The Canadian Rangers only recently gave up theirs, not because it was obsolete, but because spare parts couldn't be had any longer. And they adopted another bolt-action rifle to replace it.

@shenoyglobal Sure, that's the same cartridge as on the M-4's. The INSAS fires the same cartridge, too. The point here is that the Dragunov and PKM have an effective range of 800 to 1000m, as opposed to the M-4's and the AK-19's 500m. If the militants start shooting from, say, 750m, the villagers would hard-pressed to hit them. With the AK-47, which has a range of only 350m, it's nigh impossible.

@shenoyglobal So, you claim that Kashmiri militants unable to adapt, unlike the Taleban. Doubt it.
