  1. The problem is, the locals don't want independence. Mayotte is a case in point. The Mahorans rejected independence from France twice, in 1974 and 1976. The nearby Comoros did go for it, with the result that Comorians are now flocking to Mayotte to rejoin France, as it were.

  2.  @bl00dhoney  You're oh-so wrong. Besides France, the UK, Germany, Luxembourg, Spain, Portugal, Malta, Greece and Ukraine have birthright citizenship, be it with some restrictions. Birthright citizenship stems from ancient Roman Law, not colonialism. With the internet about, information is literally at your fingertips. I suggest you make use of it before you comment.
