The two bungling assassins, Lugovoy and Kovtun, left behind a radioactive trail of polonium-210, to and from the venues where they met Litvinenko on two separate occasions, nearly a month apart. Kovtun foolishly bragged to a friend about the super-expensive poison he was carrying. Soon afterwards, even before Litvinenko was diagnosed, he complained to his family that he, too, was poisoned. That's as good as a smoking gun. Both Lugovoy and Kovtun have links to Russian state intelligence services and polonium-210 -- well, non-state actors might as well call it unobtainium.
