  3. FortuitusVideo It's more like the rest of Britain will lose out in the democracy department after a Brexit. The powers-that-be in Norway and Switzerland are painfully aware that Brussels often decides for them, without these countries, as non-members, having a say. Not de jure, but de facto. But go right ahead, confuse the issue with irrelevant Murican rambling.

  4. Ollie Rees I said powers-that-be. The Norwegian and Swiss authorities don't decide on EU membership; their electorates do. Sadly, the Norwegian and Swiss voters are in the mistaken belief that their countries have more wiggle room than they actually do. You're right about Norway and Switzerland not having to swallow everything from the EU, but the cost of rejection may be prohibitive all the same. Glad you brought up immigration. Switzerland has agreements in place with the EU regarding free movement of people -- agreements that closely follow the Schengen agreement. The Swiss even allowed these so-called sectorial agreements to be amended "dynamically" (read: automatically) whenever the EU tweaks the Schengen agreement. Two years ago, the Swiss did vote for stricter immigration quotas in a closely fought referendum, but the EU is refusing to renegotiate the sectorial agreements. While the Swiss leaders procrastinate, unsure how to bring the populace to its senses, Switzerland has found itself excluded from key energy and research initiatives. It appears the Swiss plebs are being taught they can't have their cake and eat it, too.
