I guess you've never been to Gibraltar and seen the place for yourself. An independent Gibraltar simply isn't a viable proposition.

@deise69 The Gibraltarians will vehemently disagree with you.

@kinngrimm I own property on the nearby Costa del Sol. Gibraltar has a land area of 6.7 km2, most of which is The Rock. Luxembourg is 2,586.4 km2. The overriding impression of Gibraltar is that it's ridiculously small. So small that you have to cross the airport runway in order to reach the centre. You can't help but think: "Is this it?"

@kinngrimm The Costa del Sol is in Spain. Gibraltar, in its present form, is heavily reliant on Spanish workers and expats who live in Spain, but commute to Gibraltar every weekday. If Spain were to close the border once more -- which they might very well do if Gibraltar declares independence -- things would turn very bleak for the Gibraltarians. If independence and autonomy under Spain were the only available options, I'm sure most Gibraltarians would choose the latter.

@timmo491 I wonder if the hundreds of thousands of British expats in Spain are going to have as much fun. Also, your fun may be dampened by a deluge of returnees. Providing housing for them alone will a daunting task, to say nothing of how they'll strain the NHS even further.

@celticwarrior3354 *Gibraltarians. Do you love them so much that you've bothered to visit them? If so, you'd know they aren't Brits.

Doug 1885 None of that changes the harsh reality of Brexit for the Gibraltarians. The best they can hope for is an arrangement similar to that of Northern Ireland, where Gibraltar stays -- de facto -- in the EU single market. Also, a dual Spanish-British nationality arrangement wouldn't be a bad idea either.
