  2. republicofsandals I don't doubt they started poor and the USA didn't help matters trade-wise either (politically they were extremely helpful, however). Still, even in those circumstances Cuba could've done better economically. Economically, communism always disappoints. I bet my knowledge of history runs circles around yours.

  3. republicofsandals You're still not getting it. I'm saying Fidel and his crowd levelled the playing field, but the end result was that everyone was left relatively poor. An improvement from Batista's time, I'm sure, but still, the Cubans deserved -- and deserve -- better. Blame the Americans as much as you want -- Fidel did, very successfully -- but that doesn't alter the fact that Cuba's economic woes are mostly home-grown.

  4. republicofsandals I bet you still blame your parents for your problems, too. The Soviet Union generously bankrolled Cuba. With the money, the Cubans could've made something of themselves. Labelling the exiles as bourgeois (note the spelling) is misleading. Most arrived penniless and still did well.
