@johnkidd1226 Everything's relative, I suppose. My grandfather served continuously in combat roles from 1939 to 1944, in the Winter War and the Continuation War. His only real war-time respite was in hospital and in reserve officer school. When he was finally demobbed, my five-year-old mother wondered who this strange man was and why he got to sleep next to my grandmother.

@shawnr771 That's fine and well, but the Italians made a mine that wouldn't detonate when subjected to a sudden shock. If it was subjected to more constant pressure, it would. In other words, such mines resisted clearing with explosives.

We used to tell the same joke about the Belgians when I served in the Dutch army. During an earlier stint with the Finnish army, we joked that we had dedicated mine-stepping troops in those who opted for civilian service instead of military service. When my cousin chose the former, I couldn't resist commending him for his bravery. We're still on cool terms.
