Comments by "peabase" (@peabase) on "Finland, Sweden look to join NATO as Russia's war rages in Ukraine | DW News" video.
@vwduiven3072 Rather, Finland's relationship with Russia has always been an uneasy one. We're taught from childhood to defend ourselves against an age-old enemy. No prizes for guessing which neighbour that is.

Putin takes one step forward and two steps back. You call that progress?

Have you even begun to realise that NATO is a sum of its parts and that a great many of those parts are in the EU? In your shoes, as a Canadian, I wouldn't go boasting about military might.

And why would either agree to that? NATO is a defensive alliance. There needs to be an attack against it before NATO's defence mechanism is activated.

Is there a standing NATO army? If NATO stages an exercise with only EU members participating, isn't that a de facto EU army?

@zoranbeader6441 There's a limit to what ordinary Russians put up with. Sooner or later, Putin will get his comeuppance. The best he can hope for is to spend the rest of his days in a modest (by his standards) dacha in Inner Mongolia, courtesy of China. The next we'll hear of him is that he died.

@zoranbeader6441 I think you're underestimating Russian pride. The Soviet-Afghan War was a major catalyst in the demise of the Soviet Union, and that was a low-intensity war, a far cry from Putin's very costly "special military operation" in Ukraine. This war has been humiliating for Russia from the very beginning, too.

@zoranbeader6441 In only two months, the Russians have suffered losses in Ukraine that are comparable to ten years' worth of losses suffered by the Soviets in Afghanistan. Plus, the Soviet casualties were spread over 620,000 servicemen, while the comparable figure in Ukraine is 200,000 troops. Thus, the shock effect is greater this time. The Soviet Union survived for only three years after Afghanistan. It stands to reason that Putin's political survival will be shorter.

Let me guess. You're of small stature, you wear a bicorne hat, and you keep your hand tucked into your waistcoat.

Bring the Civil Guard back. It saved Finland's bacon in 1939.

OK, Putin troll.
1
And which fatalities have befallen NATO members?
1
But they choose not to. Democracy is a biatch, innit?

And of late, these have been bitter memories for Russia -- sorry, I mean for certain athletes representing the Russian Olympic Committee.
