@Shenzhou. This is about personal freedoms, not economic advances. One does not preclude the other, as the mainlanders seem to think (or try to convince themselves). Besides, Hong Kong's strength is its finance industry, which does not rely on extensive port facilities.

Because there was an international arrest warrant out for Puigdement?

You're plagiarising yourself.

The point here is, the Hongkies don't get to decide for themselves whether to have two, three or four systems. The one system, the least desirable one, is being rammed down their throats. Your whataboutism sounds so Soviet. Any connection there?

Actually, Brexit-Britain is hardly the place to be, especially if you're an affluent Hong Konger who's active in the financial services industry. Mainland Europe and Ireland are. We'll receive them with open arms, just like we welcome their British counterparts. Still, China will be the biggest loser. Let's also not forget one-country-two-systems was put in place to stem mass emigration from Hong Kong prior to the handover. If China continues to clamp down on civil rights in Hong Kong, there will be another wave of mass emigration.

@icarus sea You're exaggerating the influence of the nationalists. They've gained some because of the migrant crisis, but except for the ultra-nationalists, they also understand Europe's low birthrates make controlled immigration unavoidable. Some even laud well-educated Asians as the answer. Frankfurt, Paris, Amsterdam, Luxembourg and Dublin are scrambling to turn London's Brexodus to their advantage. They'd be mad not to take advantage of another financial services exodus from Hong Kong. The firms go where the talent is and vice versa.
