Comments by "peabase" (@peabase) on "EU moves to strip Hungary of €7.5 in funds over corruption | DW News" video.
I can't recall any union-level corruption scandals in the EU happening off late. Instead, it's always individual members, who fail to stamp out age-old endemic corruption, or engage in it systematically -- like Hungary. Help me out, where are the big corruption scandals that don't fall under national jurisdiction?

@M W NATO doesn't have an army either, yet it's the most formidable military alliance in human history.

It's perfectly acceptable to let the electorate decide the fate of corrupt politicians. It's sad that it doesn't work in Hungary, but it's a valid concept in countries with developed democratic institutions.

@jerronng6036 There's no appreciable problem with corruption on a union level in the EU. It's all on a national level, and the EU lacks the jurisdiction to tackle it directly.

Duh, Hungary is a net beneficiary within the EU, meaning it receives more funds that it puts in. In other words, Hungary's exit is a financial boon to us net contributors. Can you elaborate on the European principles that the EU has betrayed? I know of the European Copenhagen criteria -- democracy, human rights, market economy -- which Hungary openly flouts.

@adrianczaplinski7774 It's no wonder that Hungary can't hold its own vs. EU competitors if Orban blows generous EU grants on unproductive vanity projects, like his home-town football stadium, which seats more spectators than there are inhabitants.

That's an odd statement from someone from a country that kept a good part of Europe in enforced bondage, not to mention its own people. As good as you may be at it, don't teach the Hungarians to wallow in victimhood as well.

The threshold to act against wayward EU members should be kept high. When it's amply clear that said members don't get their act together, even after swinging carrots and sticks in front of them, only then the EU should resort to punishment.

@nyali2 Corruption is endemic and the rule of law no longer applies?

@joem0088 We're not jumping for joy to have Serbia, with its pro-Russian sentiments and fond memories of Milosevic, come and sabotage the EU's decision-making. Come to think of it, the UK, Hungary and Serbia could form a union of maladjusted contrarians.

@MrGolov-te5eb There's an inconsistency in Orban wanting EU grants but not wanting to play by EU rules. Off with freeloaders.

@MrGolov-te5eb The EU is a not a state, silly. It's a supranational union. You're embarrassing yourself.

@MrGolov-te5eb Sorry, I'm not doing conspiracy theories.

@MrGolov-te5eb It's funny that you spontaneously bring up delusions. I'll interpret it as a Freudian slip/Reaktionsbildung.
