Comments by "peabase" (@peabase) on "Putin's security zone in Ukraine, Belarus, Kazakhstan or new Soviet Union? | To the point" video.
I'm not concerned. If the US were to ignore EU interests, the EU would accelerate plans to form a military alliance of its own, to the detriment of NATO and hence, the US. Many feel this is already long overdue. Let's face it, NATO has historical baggage and its biggest member, the US, is prone to military adventurism.

@danutahanyga4834 Some informal assurances were made relating to Soviet borders, but that, too, remains a matter of controversy. At any rate, no treaties that curtailed NATO's eastward expansion were ever signed. And NATO doesn't equal the US. Russia can insist on carving out its sphere of influence till it goes blue in the face, but at the end of the day, sovereign countries have the right to choose their own alliances. Putin has set himself up to fail.

@elliekwong3180 Then please let us know which treaty was broken. If it's just transcripts of discussions, it's informal. Russia has been known to make public statements which they retracted later -- again, no treaties were signed, so they were within their rights. Besides, there was a time when Russia was contemplating NATO membership. Then, it indeed sounded like the mountain was coming to Muhammad. Now it's Muhammad that's going to the mountain. The US didn't get to decide about or set terms for German reunification. It was entirely up to the Ossies and Wessies -- the Germans. Likewise, you're under the illusion that the US gets to make unilateral decisions regarding NATO -- that's simply not the case.

@danutahanyga4834 You must be a millennial if you can't tell the difference between former Soviet borders and Russian borders. Hasn't it registered with you that, for instance, the Soviet Union straddled Poland's entire eastern border, whereas Russia only has a mutual border in Poland's northwest, south of the Kaliningrad semi-exclave? Or do you think Belarus and Ukraine are part of Russia? Educational standards must be slipping. I am not aware of the US interfering with who got to join Putin's recently dusted-off CSTO alliance, for example. Maybe you want to provide an example of said interference? Donetsk and Luhansk are Ukrainian as far as the world is concerned. The UN does not recognise them as sovereign states. Crimea, too, is still part of Ukraine in the eyes of the world.

@hisroyalmajestysonofgandal4668 So you decided to chime in with a purely personal opinion for which you don't bother to provide any argumentation. Don't waste my time.

@vulgarisopinio Yeah, what happened to de Gaulle when he chose to withdraw France from NATO's military integrated command in 1966 (not the same as leaving)? Please explain, because my academic assessment is "nothing much".
