  3. Yeltsin gave similar guarantees regarding Chechnya yet failed miserably. Putin finally succeeded in subduing the Chechens, but only after causing grievous civilian casualties. We could extrapolate from the Chechen wars that millions of civilians would die in Ukraine, amounting to a death toll similar to that of Holomodor. Does Putin want that to be his legacy?

  4. I can tell you're a military fanboy. The Russians themselves came to the conclusion that successfully launching ballistic missiles -- supersonic or hypersonic -- against aircraft carrier groups would require warheads so powerful that the only realistic option is to go nuclear. Even an excitable fanboy should be able to tell that spells nuclear armageddon for all.
