Their most vulnerable, the elderly, are often forced to live in appalling conditions. Even as it is, many succumb to pneumonia. Russian gallows humour has it that when nursing homes run out of space, the nurses open the windows. No, Putin has little reason for pleasure. The coronavirus may yet ruin his intricate plans to stay in power for life.

  2.  @YY-ms1dz  Hospitals all over Europe are being set aside to deal with coronavirus patients exclusively. Besides, building whole new hospitals in such a short period of time effectively means putting up tents, which aren't ideal to treat pneumonia victims in the best of times.
