  3.  @christheori4002  You're brazenly making stuff up. There's no Finnish-Russian agreement pertaining to Finland not joining NATO. Russia maintains to this day that Finland joining NATO is their choice. I consider it only a matter of time before Finland -- and Sweden -- do join.

  4.  @weFromRussia  Come off it. It's a common refrain by Putin that he's diversifying the Russian economy. But how could he, since he's effectively discouraging foreign investment, which would enable said diversification. To Putin, it's more important to cling to power than develop Russia economically. Sadly, his clinging to power increasingly means stirring trouble abroad, so as to divert attention from domestic woes.

  5.  @weFromRussia  It's a fact that Russia can't truly diversify its economy without foreign investment and know-how, be it Western, Chinese or Timbuktese. But it's great that you're starting to grow your own veggies. I'm sure you'll feel very diversified after a big bowl of borscht.

There's no chance of that happening under Putin, because it would entail relinquishing control. The man is a control freak. He'd rather sacrifice Russia's future than lose control.

  7.  @weFromRussia  Always the victim, never the aggressor. That, too, is a common refrain with you. Just about everyone else thinks differently, and your neighbours in particular. Actually, in the 90s, I ran a charity co-founded by my grandmother that provided material aid to destitute Russians. When the worst was over, we changed it into a foundation that grants scholarships to gifted students in Russia. Soon after, we had no choice but to switch to scholarships for studies abroad. The net result is that practically all the recipients, once they graduate, refuse to settle back in Russia. I wouldn't care too much, but my late grandmother and her sisters specifically wanted to see their birthplace flourish. Russia, under Putin, is beyond helping. My professor, another grandson of a Russian émigré, used to say that where Western countries have elections, Russia has revolutions. But hey, we'll get to put our charity to its original use again.
